Timeline

Fall 2002
Dahlia decides to that instead of going directly to college, she will travel to Cusco, Peru for 3 months with International Cultural Adventures for an immersion and community service experience. She falls in love with Peru, gains fluency in Spanish, and gathers the community together to refurbish the elementary school building where she had been volunteering as an English teacher.

Winter 2003
Dahlia returns to New York to work as a ski instructor at Hunter Mountain so that she may earn enough money to return to Peru for a second semester.  During that time she fund raises in her local community in the Hudson Valley to build a library in Cusco upon her return.

Spring 2003
Dahlia turns the library project into reality and is recognized by the mayor of Cusco for her humanitarian work.

Fall 2004
Dahlia begins her Sophomore year at Binghamton University in New York.  She joins the School of Education and Human Development.

Summer 2006
Dahlia returns to Peru to visit her host family.  She learns of a boys home where they need a ton of help.  She goes there and sees the poor conditions, then gathers her resources to provide the boys with counseling services, environmental education, health education, social skills training, music, and dance.  She purchases gas for their stove, repaints and repairs the kitchen, and purchases a refrigerator, a juicer, and cooking utensils, among other necessary items.  This project is carried out for several months after Dahlia returns to the U.S.  Unfortunately, after it is discovered that Peruvian policemen overseeing the boys home violated two of the boys, the home is dismantled and the project members are disillusioned.

Summer 2008
Dahlia and her fiance spend five weeks in Peru.  While they are there, they lay the groundwork to open up a home for abandoned street children.

Fall 2008
Corazon de Dahlia files articles of corporation in both Peru and the United States to become an official non-profit organization.  We recruit volunteers and begin fundraising for our upcoming initiative.

Winter 2009
Corazon de Dahlia becomes an official incorporation on January 27, 2009.  Our 501(c)3 paperwork is approved.

Spring 2009
